  121.      This version of FontKat runs in WordPerfect/WIN only, versions
  122.      7.0, 6.1, and 6.0a. There is another edition for WordPerfect for

  126.      PRINTDOC.BAT, NOT with WordPerfect.

  130.      FONTKAT is designed to create a custom catalog of all fonts
  131.      available to WordPerfect. With the printed catalog showing
  132.      samples of all your fonts you will be able to quickly and easily
  133.      choose the font which is just right for the job at hand.

  177.      Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  178.      before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  179.      using it, you are legally required to register. With
  180.      registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  181.      using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  454.      Introduction
  455.      ============

  457.      With WordPerfect and carefully chosen fonts just about anyone can
  458.      create documents which look professionally printed. Very often
  459.      the challenge is to find just the right font for the job at hand.
  460.      The macros and templates in this package will allow you to create
  461.      a printed catalog of all the fonts available to WordPerfect. With
  462.      the printed catalog finding the right font will be much easier.

  467.      This version of FontKat was tested with the versions of
  468.      WordPerfect listed below. If you wish to run it with a NEWER
  469.      version of WordPerfect, and it doesn't run as this manual says it
  470.      should, call for support--there will be either a fix or a new
  471.      release, as needed, to fix any problems caused by new features.

  477.      Installation
  478.      ------------

  480.      Installation of the files comprising the FONTKAT system is
  481.      accomplished by running the appropriate setup macro provided. If
  482.      you want to install FONKAT for use with either WP 6.0a or 6.1,
  483.      use SETUP6. If you intend to use FONTKAT with WP 7.0, use SETUP7.
  484.  
  485.      Start WordPerfect for Windows as you normally do. From the
  486.      editing screen activate the appropriate setup macro by pressing
  487.      Macro (Alt-F10), enter the full path and filename to SETUP6.WCM
  488.      or SETUP7.WCM (for example, "A:\SETUP7"). The installation
  489.      program will prompt you to enter the information it needs:
  490.  
  491.           "Copy the files from:"
  492.                This is where the uninstalled files are located.  The
  493.                default value is A:\.  Edit the line as needed to
  494.                reflect the full path to the files (such as
  495.                "D:\DOWNLOAD", for instance).
  496.  
  497.           "Copy the macros to:"
  498.                Your Main and Supplemental macro directories are shown
  499.                as radio buttons. By default your Main macro directory
  500.                is selected as the place to copy FONTKAT macro files
  501.                to. If you want them placed in your Supplemental macro
  502.                directory, simply click on it.

  511.                This is where the documentation file, template files,
  512.                and other related documents, will be copied to. It will
  513.                be a directory named FONTKAT created off of your
  514.                WordPerfect program directory. You cannot edit this
  515.                option.

  517.           NOTE:  SETUPx.WCM will NOT be copied to either of these
  518.                directories so be sure to keep a backup copy of the
  519.                original FONTKAT disk.

  524.      What Does Fontkat Do?
  525.      ---------------------
  526.  
  527.      One of the nice features of Windows based programs is the ability
  528.      to work with scalable fonts without relying upon an external
  529.      third party program.  For the first time many of us were able to
  530.      produce documents with class since we no longer had to rely upon
  531.      the handful of fonts built into our printers.  Acquiring
  532.      additional fonts from various outlets, in a short time the number
  533.      of fonts I had available was getting into the hundreds.  Soon I
  534.      was asking myself, "Which font should I use in this situation? 
  535.      Is this the font which looked good on screen but terrible when
  536.      printed?  What does this font REALLY look like?"
  537.  
  538.      FONTKAT is designed to create a custom catalog of your fonts. 
  539.      With the printed catalog showing samples of all your fonts you
  540.      will be able to quickly and easily choose the font which is just
  541.      right for the job at hand.

  543.      Overview
  544.      --------
  545.  
  546.      In the next section I will explain in detail all options found on
  547.      the various menus.  Assuming you can figure those things out for
  548.      yourself, here is a quick run down of what is necessary to
  549.      produce a catalog of all your fonts.
  550.  
  551.      From the main menu of FONTKAT select the text and point size you
  552.      want to use in producing the font samples.  Click on "Select
  553.      Fonts to Catalog" and select those fonts you want included in
  554.      this catalog and click on OK.  Now from the main menu select
  555.      "Create Catalog".  FONTKAT will prompt you to enter a filename to
  556.      use in saving the finished catalog.  Once you've entered the
  557.      filename, FONTKAT will go into action creating the font catalog.

  566.      When done FONTKAT will give you a brief report of the font
  567.      catalog just created.  FONTKAT will leave you with the first file
  568.      comprising the catalog displayed on screen.

  570.      Detailed Instructions
  571.      ---------------------
  572.  
  573.      Using FONTKAT should be relatively easy and self-explanatory. 
  574.      However, I will proceed to explain as thoroughly as possible the
  575.      workings of the program to avoid any problems.
  576.  
  577.      Activate FONTKAT as you would any WordPerfect macro.  From the
  578.      main editing screen press Macro (Alt-F10) and enter "FONTKAT".
  579.      You can also click on the "FontKat" button on the main screen of
  580.      the FONTMAP program (Not in Evaluation Edition).
  581.  
  582.      FONTKAT goes through an initialization process which will take a
  583.      few seconds. When done, the main menu will appear.  It is divided
  584.      into three sections:
  585.  
  586.          Current Printer
  587.          ---------------
  588.          The currently active printer is listed along with the total
  589.          number of fonts you have selected to be cataloged and the
  590.          total number of fonts available for this printer.  This

  593.          Text to Use in Sampling Each Font

  595.          There are six ways provided to sample each font.  These six
  596.          options are mutually exclusive meaning when you select one of
  597.          these options the others will automatically become
  598.          unselected.

  600.          1) You can have the font name itself to be the text to use
  601.             in illustrating the font.  This is the default and what
  602.             many will be satisfied with.

  608.          2) You can have a short phrase followed by the font name
  609.             illustrating the font. The default setting for the short
  610.             text is "This is a sample of ". If you select this option
  611.             you will be prompted for the short text to use just prior
  612.             to actually creating the catalog.

  625.             the alphabet, along with the other characters available
  626.             from the keyboard, indented on the next line. The font
  627.             names themselves would all be in the same initial font
  628.             but the indented alphabet beneath them would be in the
  629.             actual font being illustrated.

  639.             If you select this option you will be prompted to choose
  640.             the phrase to use just prior to creating the catalog.
  641.             Several phrases are supplied to choose from or you can
  642.             choose to type in your own phrase. You can even have
  643.             FONTKAT to randomly use all supplied phrases (Not in
  644.             Evaluation Edition).

  651.          5) The fifth option is just like number 3 above except the
  652.             phrase which will be used to illustrate the font is a

  661.          6) Yet another option is the One-Font-Per-Page Spec Sheet.
  662.             With this option a spec sheet is created for each font
  663.             selected. If it is a scalable font, the spec sheet will
  664.             show the font in various point sizes and will briefly
  665.             illustrate the different appearance attributes on the
  666.             font (such as Bold, Italic, etc...). If it is not a
  667.             scalable font, FONTKAT will seek to illustrate the
  668.             various CPI (characters-per-inch) fonts available for
  669.             that typeface. It will also show the affect of appearance
  670.             attributes on the font (Not in Evaluation Edition).

  678.          Font Options
  679.          ------------

  681.          This section presents various options dealing with the fonts
  682.          themselves.  The default size for the font samples is 12
  683.          point.  If you would like the samples to be of some other
  684.          size, change this setting as needed.
  685.  
  686.          "Select Fonts to Catalog" presents you with a dialog box from
  687.          which you select the fonts you want to catalog. This dialog
  688.          box consists of two list boxes. The list on the left contains
  689.          the names of those fonts which are NOT to be cataloged while
  690.          the list on the right contains the names of those fonts you
  691.          DO want to catalog. FONTKAT will retrieve the available fonts
  692.          for your current printer the first time during a FONTKAT
  693.          session you click on "Select Fonts to Catalog". Subsequent
  694.          visits to this dialog box during a FONTKAT session will be
  695.          much faster since the fonts will already be known.
  696.  
  697.          To move fonts from one list to the other, click on the name
  698.          of the font in the list or use the appropriate "All" or
  699.          "Pattern" button (Registered Edition Only) to move all of the
  700.          list or only those fonts matching a text pattern. Once the
  701.          list on the right contains the names of the fonts you want to
  702.          catalog, click on OK.

  704.      Creating the Catalog
  705.      --------------------
  706.  
  707.      Once you have selected the fonts to include in the catalog, the
  708.      "Create Catalog" option will become available at the bottom of
  709.      the screen on the main menu.  When you select it, FONTKAT will
  710.      prompt you to select or enter a phrase to use if you selected
  711.      options 2 or 4 as the type of catalog to produce. 
  712.  
  713.      Next, FONTKAT will prompt you for a filename to use in saving
  714.      your font catalog.  Due to limitations imposed by WordPerfect
  715.      itself and to insure that everything stays under control, FONTKAT
  716.      will save small groups of your fonts to separate files.  The
  717.      actual number of fonts in the individual files will vary due to
  718.      the type of font samples being created and because FONTKAT will
  719.      end one file and begin the next at the end of the last full page
  720.      of font samples.  These individual catalog segment files will be
  721.      given the filename you enter with the file extension of ".Sxx",
  722.      where xx is the number of the "S"egment file.  If you used the
  723.      default FONTKAT filename then there may be FONTKAT.S01,
  724.      FONTKAT.S02, FONTKAT.S03 and so on.  These files are saved in
  725.      your default document directory.

  734.      Before actually beginning to build the font catalog FONTKAT will
  735.      have to sort the list of fonts selected for cataloging. This is a
  736.      two pass process. If a large number of fonts have been selected
  737.      for cataloging, this sorting process may take a few seconds.
  738.  
  739.      A dialog box will be displayed on screen during the cataloging
  740.      process showing the progress being made.  The font currently
  741.      being cataloged is listed along with two bars at the bottom
  742.      showing the percent completed on the current font as well as all
  743.      fonts.
  744.  
  745.      During the cataloging process you can click on "Pause Cataloging
  746.      Process" to halt the process. You will be given three options:
  747.          Resume Cataloging of Fonts.
  748.          Cancel Catalog, Removing All Traces of Current Run.
  749.          Cancel Catalog, Leaving Progress so Far.
  750.  
  751.      When done, FONTKAT will present a short message summarizing the
  752.      catalog it has just created. The first segment file of your
  753.      catalog will be on screen when FONTKAT ends.
  754.  
  755.      Printing Your Font Catalog
  756.      --------------------------
  757.  
  758.      To obtain your printed catalog, print the various segment files
  759.      of your catalog in order. If everything has gone as designed, you
  760.      will have one continuous font catalog ready for use.
  761.  
  762.      Font Catalogs Using Multinational Character Sample
  763.      --------------------------------------------------
  764.  
  765.      One of the options you have with FONTKAT is to create a font
  766.      catalog illustrating the capabilities of selected fonts to print
  767.      multinational characters.  This should be especially useful for
  768.      users needing multinational characters who are uncertain which
  769.      fonts support such characters.
  770.  
  771.      FONTKAT does not use the entire multinational character set but,
  772.      rather, about a dozen carefully chosen characters to give you a
  773.      sample of the more commonly used multinational characters.
  774.          NOTE: if you know of additional characters which
  775.             ought to be included in this option, please bring
  776.             them to our attention.

  778.      To print your font catalog with multinational character samples
  779.      make certain you select "Do Not Print Graphics" from the Print
  780.      Dialog. Printing your catalog in this way helps to show which
  781.      fonts are missing multinational characters.

  793.      What Does Fontmap Do?
  794.      ---------------------
  795.  
  796.      International/symbol/dingbat type of fonts are difficult to use
  797.      simply because there is no easy way to know what keypress will
  798.      type what character from the font.  FONTMAP is a utility to
  799.      provide you with a printed keyboard map to such fonts.
  800.  
  801.      Detailed Instructions
  802.      ---------------------
  803.  
  804.      You activate FONTMAP as you do any macro program. From the main
  805.      editing screen press Macro (Alt-F10) and enter "FONTMAP". You can
  806.      also click on the "FontMap" button on the main screen of the
  807.      FONTKAT program  (Not in Evaluation Edition).
  808.  
  809.      When the main menu of FONTMAP appears the cursor will be on the
  810.      "Create a Keyboard Font Map" button. Press ENTER or Click on it
  811.      to begin the process of creating a map to a font.
  812.  
  813.      To create a font map you only need to specify two fonts.  Prior
  814.      to displaying the Font dialog FONTMAP will present a short
  815.      message about the font you are about to select. First, you will
  816.      select a font which will be appropriate for the title for the
  817.      font map as well as the labels for the keyboard keys.  Be sure
  818.      whatever font you select is one which has the characters which
  819.      match those on your keyboard.  Most of the fonts I have would
  820.      qualify but some I thought would be appropriate had nothing
  821.      showing for certain characters.  So be sure you select a font
  822.      which has all the characters in it.
  823.  
  824.      Once you have selected the font for the title and key labels
  825.      FONTMAP will prompt you to select the font for which you need a
  826.      keyboard map.  This may be an international or symbol or dingbat
  827.      font or any other type of font you want to have a keyboard map
  828.      to. Once you have made your selection FONTMAP asks for you to
  829.      confirm the choices you have made.  If the information is not
  830.      correct, answer NO and start over.  Answering YES causes the
  831.      actual keyboard font map to be created.
  832.  
  833.      Printing Your Font Map
  834.      ----------------------
  835.  
  836.      Once the keyboard font map has been created FONTMAP asks if you
  837.      want commands sent to WordPerfect to start printing your font
  838.      map.  FONTMAP will simply send "Print Document on Disk" commands
  839.      and nothing else.  FONTMAP will not:

  847.          >  tell WordPerfect to print the job graphically

  851.      If any of these things needs to be done from within WordPerfect
  852.      before printing your keyboard font map, answer NO to FONTMAP's
  853.      prompt.  If you answer yes, FONTMAP will send the necessary
  854.      commands to WordPerfect and end. If you answer no, FONTMAP will
  855.      end with your font map on the screen.
  856.  
  857.      Trouble-shooter's Guide
  858.      =======================
  859.  
  860.      At the time of release, only these problems were known. If you
  861.      should experience any problems at all, please let us know. We
  862.      will do all we can to rectify the problem. If it cannot be
  863.      handled by FONTKAT, then a report of that problem will be posted
  864.      in this slot.
  865.  
  866.      "After running a macro from a floppy disk, such as a Setup macro,
  867.      there is a "Drive a: not ready" error message every time I start
  868.      WordPerfect."
  869.  
  870.      The "drive a: not ready" problem is caused by a bug or a feature
  871.      in WPWin, depending on how you define a bug. The programmers'
  872.      intent was to allow you to speed-run a macro by pressing Alt-F10,
  873.      Down Arrow, and selecting from the list of recently-run macros.
  874.      That's convenient, but they made two assumptions that are
  875.      unreasonable, specifically that the macros run are always on a
  876.      non-removable drive, and that it would be OK to try to check the
  877.      drive for their existence during start-up. Apparently, the
  878.      problem is inconsistent, and does not happen to all users.
  879.  
  880.      The result is that running a macro from a CD-ROM or a floppy disk
  881.      will trigger the problem. The first fix listed is the best, but
  882.      unclear. Simply run any four different macros from the hard
  883.      drive, possibly fontkat, graphcat, fontup, and fontdn. The later
  884.      two shipped with WP, are harmless, and make only minor formatting
  885.      changes to the current page. Note that retrieving a document from
  886.      a floppy will cause the same problem, and that retrieving four
  887.      documents from the hard drive will fix it. Unchecking the box in
  888.      Preferences, Environment, Display Last Open Filenames will also
  889.      fix the problem for most users.

  903.      that FontKat runs won't catalog them all!"

  905.      Then don't do that. Creating catalogs of about 100 fonts is
  906.      generally safe for most users; others will be able to catalog
  907.      over 200 fonts at one time. Remember that if you break your
  908.      catalogs up into sections, they're faster to update when you just
  909.      add one or a handful of new fonts--just recreate those sections
  910.      that have new or replacement fonts.
